Pillar 1
Charlottesville Financial Capability
Financial capability is a fundamental part of our plan to create pathways of financial resilience, stability, and mobility in Charlottesville’s Black community.
Financial capability can be thought of as the sum of one’s financial knowledge, skills, and resources. Knowledge can mean understanding the terms of credit. Skills can mean performing budget calculations to know where you stand. Resources can refer to the accessibility of high quality yet affordable financial services. Difficulties in any of these three areas can negatively affect your progress towards financial security.
See how working with a personal coach can help you strengthen your financial capabilities. Do you need assistance understanding how to maximize your credit score? Or are you ready to buy your first home? Wherever you would like to see your financial journey take you, our coach can assist you with reaching your goals.

The Credit and Money Management Program
The Credit and Money Management Program, a core focus of HOPE Inside Adult Empowerment programming, is designed to transform enhance financial mindsets—teaching people the language of money, how to navigate credit, and make more informed decisions with the money they have.
Through workshops and one-on-one counseling, our financial well-being coaches empower clients to take control of their finances, by creating a budget, reducing and paying of debt, and clearing errors from their credit reports. Seventy-two percent of clients see a FICO score increase; 25 percent achieve a 700+ FICO score after six months of participation.
With the HOPE 700-Credit-Score-Communities initiative, the focus on raising client FICO scores to 700 and bringing financial uplift to communities, is at the foundation of the Credit and Money Management Program—working to rehabilitate the credit, financial, and overall well-being profile of the HOPE client, and the future bank borrower, and by extension, the community as a whole.
A community empowered with financial dignity asks better questions, demands better products and services, is more aspirational, and is better positioned. An empowered community is a community filled with economic opportunity.
